History of Fair Fares

Who is Fair Fares?
Painting by Katie Gerke.
This painting was presented to Mayor Bronconnier
and City Council to celebrate the creation
of a monthly transit pass for Calgarians living on low income
We are a group of citizens living on low-income, community organizers and service providers working towards an affordable city for all. Calgarians need to get around our city. Since 2021 we have operated under the name of Fair Calgary Community Voices.

What we do
·     Raise awareness of public transportation issues facing people living on low-income.
·     Educate the community about the public transportation subsidies available to Calgarians living with low-income.
·      Collect ideas and stories to improve transportation programs.

A survey we did back in 2012 said even 50% of the price for the regular pass was still unaffordable.

Since 2012, Our work over the last few years has been trying to improve the application process (now known as a program with the City of Calgary called "Fair Entry".

We are also busy supporting our City implement a pricing model known as "sliding scale" which came into effect April 1st, 2017.

We also work as a collective with a group known as "Fair Calgary Community Voices." This group will be speaking to the City Budget on November 27th, 2017.
